Social Media has an enormous effect on the world around us. However, is that effect beneficial? Or could it destroy us?
"Teens of this generation are far too involved in their phone and the world that they build inside social media." Says medical professional Susan Kelly of Oxford University. Research shows that when spending too much time on their phones, teens can develop an altered sense of reality because of the unrealistic world they see on their phones everyday.
Teens start to lose their own sense of self and just morph in with everyone else. Studies show that teens who use their phones more than the healthy average begin to show decline in independence and intelligence.
Teen Abby, aged 15, says that "Having social media hasn't affected my personality at all; as long as I keep a balanced time limit then I am fine. I make sure not to look at anything I can't handle." The teens themselves don't seem to feel as though they are suffering at all, or that social media is affecting them in anyway.
Social media is a platform that allows teens to see everything from other people's points of view. It is very common for teens to develop a style similar to someone else they e on the internet. Lyla says "Through social media I have been given the opportunity to find out who I really am. I saw what other people were wearing and what they were doing and I knew that was what I wanted to do."
Social media has allowed people to have an identity and feel seen by other, it can have a negative affect, but as long as it is controlled social media can be a positive place for self-discovery.
